| Balinese artist receives Nakasone Yasuhiro Award | I Wayan Karja, an artist from Indonesian island resort of Bali, received "Nakasone Yasuhiro Award" from Japan last week. Arriving back here from Japan on Monday, Wayan Karja stated the world's prestigious award was given to him by the Institute for International Policy Studies which has been established by former Japanese Prime Minister Nakasone Yasuhiro.
Born 41 years ago in Ubud, a remarkable town in the middle of the island of Bali, Wayan Karja has been communicating with international community through his painting exhibitions for more than 15 years. For more than a century, Ubud, his place of birth, has been the island's preeminent center for fine arts, dance and music while it once was a haven for scruffy backpackers, cosmic seekers, artists and bohemians.
Ubud is now a hot spot for literati, glitterati, art collectors and connoisseurs and is still popular with backpackers, mystics and all the finest fringe elements of global society.
Wayan Karja, who was also an academician at Indonesian Fine Arts Institute (ISI) in Denpasar, explained that the Nakasone Yusuhiro Award was presented to those less than 40 years of age with various achievements in art and cultural works.
"I proposed several requirements for the award two years ago but out of the clear blue sky I was invited by former Japanese Prime Minister Nakasone Yasuhiro to receive the award," Wayan Karja stated.
He added that the award was specially presented to those who have outstanding performance and dedication in the field of politics, social and culture, environment, and art.
Wayan Karja was the second person from Indonesia to receive the award in art after a politician from the University of Indonesia has received a similar prize earlier. Besides Wayan Karja, the Institute for International Policy Studies at the same occasion also presented a similar award to three other artists from Iraq, the Philippines and Japan. [bisnis bali]
