| "Panggal Buaya” wood getting rare | “Panggal buaya” or crocodile wood is a qualified material to create artworks like statues. The wood’s existence is getting rare and its price is more expensive. This makes craftsmen cannot fulfill costumers’ demands dominated by foreign tourists.
I Wayan Mandra a wooden craftsman at Br.Tangkeban hamlet, Sukawati on Monday stated that, wooden statue’s demands from foreign markets are still stable particularly, statues made of crocodile wood which are well-known for their fine qualities compared with other local materials. Several statues such Ganesha statue and typical Balinese dancer made of crocodile wood are mostly caught customers’ interest.
Wooden statue sculpted from this wood are most wanted by foreign countries. The highest demands come from European countries, like Italy, France, Germany, etc followed by several countries in Asia, like Japan. “During this time, the demand of Ganesha statue and typical Balinese dancer with small size less then 25 cm to 1 meter is high enough,” Mr. Mandra stated while added, he purchase several crocodile wood materials from supplier in Ubud village, which will be exported to foreign markets beside offered in Ubud’s local markets.
Due to the rarity of woods, price of crocodile woods go beyond two million rupiah on average per meter cubic depending on sizes.
He stated, there are several villages in the regencies of Badung, Tabanan, Jembrana that produces this kind of wood but since the increase of the wood, the supply decreases.
According to this wood supplier, Gejer, the wood is not only suitable to be sculpted into statues; this wood is believed to contain magic power. Thus, if the wood supply exists, the owner will not sell the wood easily. This is also another cause why the existence of crocodile woods in markets decline.[BisnisBali]
